Reading Tarot Cards

I think you’ll agree with me that learning to read Tarot cards can be something of a challenge. Especially when you’re first starting out. There are countless books on the subject, and so much information on the internet about what all the different cards mean. It can be overwhelming. I know, I’ve been there. I’ve been reading Tarot cards for more than 30 years, and I can tell you it is always a fascinating experience. But anyone who wants to can learn!

Which Tarot deck should I get?

There are so many different kind of Tarot decks that it can be hard to choose one. One that is best for you.

Examples of great decks are: Rider-Waite deck, Modern Witch Tarot deck, Morgan Greer Tarot deck, Crowley Thoth Tarot deck, Aquarian Tarot, the list goes on.

One of the best for any beginner (or even an advanced Tarot card reader) is the Rider Waite Tarot deck. Each card in this deck is beautifully illustrated and tends to depict what the card actually means. So it displays a clear interpretation, which saves one from having to keep looking up each meaning of each card, as they go through the spread.

What does each card mean?

Each deck comes with a little pamphlet of information letting you know the meaning of each card. But don’t let that restrict you. Any time you read Tarot cards, take some time to focus on each one and note any intuitive impressions you receive from it. These impressions can be just as valid as the more literal meaning of the card. There are also multiple books out there that can provide meanings for each card.

One important thing to keep in mind is that each card is linked to the other. So for example, you have the Empress card, and then the next card is the Ace of Cups. Since both cards are next to each other, this indicates pregnancy.

Another example is the Justice card and next is the 10 of Swords. Since both cards are next to each other, this indicates major loss of funds, bankruptcy.

That being said, don’t let the cards scare you. The Death card, for example, doesn’t typically mean literal death. It usually describes an ending to a situation, or a powerful transformation that one is currently – or about to – undergo.

Can I read for myself and others, or just others?

You can read Tarot cards for yourself AND whomever you wish to read for. The main thing is you should have fun with it!

I would also advise that if you do read for others, that it is one on one, and not you reading for several people in a group together. You may intuitively pick up something that is rather private and that is currently happening or about to happen for the person you’re reading for, something that they may not want you to share in front of other people.

So go out there and search for the perfect Tarot card deck for you!
